Moving Checklist
q
Make a “moving box”. Put all of
your checklist stuff in it. It stays
WITH you.
q
As soon as you know you are going to move, start keeping magazine
labels, catalogue labels, and envelopes from people who send you mail, for
change of address forms.
q
Obtain copies of all medical, druggist, veterinarian, school, auto
repair and insurance records.
q
Complete mail forwarding forms for the post office. Make sure to renew the forwarding as often as
possible to at least get you through the “Christmas card” mail.
q
Ask the phone company to give callers your new phone number after you
move.
q
Throw things away or donate them BEFORE you move. Too many people throw
things away as they are unpacking!
q
Have all utilities disconnected two days after you move, giving you
some leeway in the event of delays. Put
an old bill for each utility in your moving box, in case you need the account
numbers after you move.
q
Don’t pack your local phone directory–take it with you. You’ll need that more than you think after
you move, usually immediately.
q
Make sure that anyone holding a security deposit has your new
address. Also, any former employers who
might need to send you a W-2.
q
Put all prescription medicine and all frequently taken over-the-counter
medicine in your moving box.
q
Don’t label your boxes, number them.
Keep an index of what is in each numbered box. That way, strangers won’t know what you own.
q
Place colored tape on each box indicating the room it should be placed
in after you move. You’ll be surprised
how easy it will be to unpack if you can tell movers, “All boxes with green
tape go in the living room”, for example.
