Packing for Storage
q
First: Throw or give away anything
you don’t need anymore. Why pay storage
fees AND THEN throw it away after you move in to your new place?
q
Put heavy things in small boxes.
You might be the one lifting them.
q
Don’t label your boxes with their contents. Number them, and keep two copies of a key
with descriptions of what is in each box. This keeps strangers from seeing what
you are storing, AND, if anything happens, you have a complete list of what
you’ve lost.
q
Place strips of colored tape, or colored labels, on all four sides and
the top of each box. Use green for
kitchen things, for example, red for child’s bedroom, etc. That way, you and your helpers can sort boxes
quickly when you are unpacking. Do the
same thing with colored tags for furniture.
q
Pack blankets and other light-weight, bulky, items, inside dresser
drawers.
q
Hang clothing inside wardrobe boxes.
You’ll take up slightly more room than if you used regular boxes, but
your clothing won’t need to be washed or ironed when you bring it out of
storage.
q
Leave appliance doors slightly open.
Put small bags of charcoal (not the easy-light kind, with starter fluid
in it) in the appliances in order to absorb odors.
q
Your things might be in storage longer than you think. Place all Christmas decorations together, in
an easy-to-reach spot, and do the same with out-of-season clothing.
q
Do not store food, unless it is canned goods. It will just attract pests, no matter how
well you think you’ve wrapped it up.
q
Cover matresses and box springs with their
own fitted sheets. This will keep them
clean, AND will let them breathe, cutting down on moisture problems.
q Use good paste wax on the large, flat, surfaces of wood furniture. Don’t wipe it all off. This will cut down on moisture.
