Pets and Moving

v     If you are moving in-town, take your pet over to the new place several times for “visits”.  That way, when you do actually move, everything won’t be so strange and scary.

v     Gather toys, food and water bowls, and bedding and put them in an easily retrievable place.  Resist the urge to wash everything before you move–your pet will want his familiar things to smell familiar.

v     If you are moving out of town but will be driving, try to acclimate your pet to a travel crate beforehand.  Place it in your house, with some of his favorite toys inside or a piece of your old clothing. Never close the door on it.  Your pet will soon view the travel crate is a really neat, safe place to sleep.  It will then be easier to keep him in it, with the door closed, while you drive.

v     If your pet will be tranquilized during the move, test the medication several weeks ahead of time, for dosage and possible side effects.

v     If you are changing veterinarians, obtain copies of all medical records for your pets. Also refill all prescriptions so that you have “spares”.

v     Make sure that your pet’s tags have your new address and phone number, or your new veterinarian.

v     Once at your new place, even if it has a fenced yard, walk your pet around the neighborhood several times.  That way it will become oriented and, if it does escape from a fenced yard, it will know the way home.
