Small Children and Moving

)For young children, read or tell them stories about moving.  The stories should deal with negative as well as positive feelings.  Repeat the stories frequently, don’t read them only once.  Some suggestions: The Berenstain Bears’ Moving Day; What’s the Recipe for Friends; Boxes, Boxes, Everywhere; and Ira Says Goodbye.  Ask storage clerk for more suggestions.

)If you are moving in town, visit the new neighborhood several times with them.  Point out all the neat stuff nearby–parks, fast food, amusements, etc.

)If you are moving out of town, obtain all the photographs you can from your new town.  These can come from the internet, Chamber of Commerce, realtor, or your new employer.  Hang the photos and a map of your new town on the wall.  Talk often about what things you will do after the move.

)Buy brightly colored paper and help them write letters to all of their friends, letting them know the new address.

)Allow them to pack their own (non-breakable) items and label their own boxes. Encourage them to be as creative as they want in decorating “their” boxes.

)Schedule ten minute breaks once an hour to spend with your children.  The loss of ten minutes an hour will be more than compensated by the increased efficiency during the other fifty minutes!

)After the move, walk them around the neighborhood.  Make sure they memorize their new address and phone number.  Be sure to show them what the police officers and cars in their new town look like.
